from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stephanus Parmenius , Hungarian Budai Parmenius István (* 1555-1560 in furnace ; † August 29, 1583 , Atlantic Ocean ) was a humanist born in today's Hungary . He may have been the first Hungarian to visit North America , but nothing is known about his native language.

He probably studied at the University of Heidelberg and Oxford , where he met Humphrey Gilbert . He took him on a research trip to the New World as a chronicler . This began on June 11, 1583, the starting port of the small flotilla (consisting of the four ships Raleigh, Delight, Golden Hind , Swallow and Squirrel) was Plymouth . On August 3rd, the coast of what is now Newfoundland was reached. On the return voyage, the barque Delight, on which Parmenius was, capsized off Sable Island . Parmenius was among the dead. His travelogue in Latin verse, written as a letter to Richard Hakluyt in Oxford, has been preserved.
