The St. Stephen's Church (Pol. Św Kościół. Szczepana ) in Krakow was a Catholic church on Plac Szczepański in the western part of Krakow's Old Town .
history
It was built before 1257 in the brick Gothic style. It was one of the four major parish churches in Krakow. In 1579 Bishop Piotr Myszkowski gave the church to the Jesuits , which was confirmed by King Stephan Báthory in 1583. The Jesuits immediately committed to baroqueizing the church. The new baroque altar was inaugurated in 1588. In 1624–1625 baroque chapels were built on the nave of the church. In the second half of the 17th century the church received a baroque front facade and even the Gothic vault was converted into a Baroque barrel vault . However, the Jesuits had to vacate the church in 1732 and it was given to Kraków University . In 1797 the parish of St. Stephen was moved to the Carmelite Church and the church with the surrounding post-Jesuit buildings and smaller churches was demolished in 1802. The resulting square was named Plac Szczepański (St. Stephen's Square) after the church . In the years 1933-1938 was in the style of modernism , a new St. Stephen's Church in the district of Krowodrza built, are in which parts of the original interior of St. Stephen's Church, including the Baroque altar from 1588, the Gothic font from 1425, the reliquaries of St. Stephen and of Saint Ursula. There are also works of art in other Kraków churches that were originally made for St. Stephen's Church.
