Krowodrza is a district of the city of Krakow in Poland , northwest of Kraków's Old Town , which is eponymous for district V , but the part north of the railway line is in district IV Prądnik Biały .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1257 as Crowodra . The name means: the place where the cows were skinned . In 1442 the surname Stary Worwark (for example Old Vorwerk ) was mentioned once , and there were, as in Nowa Wieś and Czarna Wieś , many farms, meadows, fields and gardens of the Krakow citizens. Later the place belonged to the Juridika Biskupie (the Kraków bishops).

When Poland was partitioned for the third time in 1795, it became part of the Habsburg Empire . In the years 1815–1846 the village belonged to the Republic of Kraków , in 1846 it was annexed to the Austrian Empire as part of the short-lived Grand Duchy of Kraków . From 1855 it was part of the Kraków District . In the eastern part of the village barracks and a fortress of the Kraków fortress were built, which initiated urbanization, followed by industrialization.

In 1900 the municipality of Krowodrza had an area of ​​421 hectares with 187 houses and 5045 inhabitants, the majority of whom were Polish-speaking (4623) and Roman Catholic (4890), in addition (mostly in the military) 267 German-speaking, 121 Jews.

On April 1, 1910, the community was incorporated into Krakow. In 1921 the district XVII. Krowodrza 343 buildings with 6,689 inhabitants, of which the majority of Polish nationality (6786) and Roman Catholic (6869), also the largest minority of Jews, which numbered 249 people.
