Stephen Brett (born November 23, 1985 in Waiouru , New Zealand ) is a rugby union player who plays for Canterbury in the Air New Zealand Cup and for the Crusaders in the Super 14 . He also played for the Junior All Blacks in 2007 . He is an accomplished back-team player but prefers the connector position , although he can also play as an inner three-quarters and goalkeeper .

Brett is known for his brilliant running and passing skills. Furthermore, he is still working hard to improve his kicking and defensive skills.

Career

Brett was appointed in 2006 in the Super Rugby squad Crusaders, but he did not come until the following season his first appearance in the Super 14. Since the regular connector Daniel Carter because of the "reconditioning program" of the All Blacks for Preparing for the World Cup was not in the Crusaders squad, Brett got his chance as number 10. He finished the 2007 Super 14 season as the top scorer of the Crusaders with 90 points.

He kept his good shape in the 2008 season, in which he put a try and received the prize as "Man of the Match" in the 54-19 victory of the Crusaders in Pretoria over the reigning champions Bulls . He then broke his collarbone in a 55-7 win over the Cheetahs . Because of the injury, Brett had to take a six-week break. At the end of the season he and his team won the Super 14 tournament by beating the Waratahs from Australia in the final . He was considered one of the contenders for a place in the squad of the "All Blacks", but Stephen Donald was preferred to him for the test matches in June and the Tri-Nations tournament . He was instead nominated for the New Zealand Māori and competed for this team in the Pacific Nations Cup .

Private

  • Brett is the stepson of Victor Simpson , who is a former inner three quarters of Canterbury and the All Blacks.
  • Outside of the rugby field, he is a keen golfer .
