Stephen Garrett Henry

Stephen Garrett Henry (born November 23, 1894 in Melrose , Louisiana - † January 5, 1973 ) was an American officer, most recently major general .

Life

Henry was born on Melrose Plantation in Melrose, Louisiana. He was inducted into the Louisiana National Guard as a second lieutenant in the infantry in 1916 to serve on the Mexican border. After graduating from Louisiana State University in 1917, Henry served in the American Expeditionary Forces in France and Germany during World War I. After the war, Henry attended various officer training courses in the US Army and continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology . Soon after, he organized the Armored Force School in Fort Knox , Kentucky, which he took over.

During World War II , he took command of the 20th Armored Division in February 1943 , before being appointed director of the New Developments Division in the War Department in October of the same year . As such, he also took over the leadership of the American Crossbow Committee formed in late 1943 . From August 1944 to October 1945 he was Assistant Chief of Staff, G-1 , in charge of personnel, in the War Department before retiring from the army in 1946.

He then worked as a manager in the Ethyl Corporation (until 1959), as chairman of the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce and the Baton Rouge Freight and Transportation Bureau .
