Stephen Island is a 6 km long icy island off the Ruppert coast of the west Antarctic Marie-Byrd-Land . It lies on the west side of the Nickerson Ice Shelf .
The United States Geological Survey mapped them using their own surveys and using aerial photographs of the United States Navy between 1959 and 1965. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1966 after Alexander Stephen (1795–1875), founder of the shipbuilding company Alexander Stephen & Sons from Glasgow who built the expedition ships Nimrod (1866), USS Bear (1874) and Terra Nova (1884), among others .
