Stephen Tomlin (sculptor)
Hon. Stephen "Tommy" Tomlin (born March 2, 1901 in London , † January 5, 1937 there ) was a British sculptor .
Life
Stephen Tomlin, also known as Tommy Tomlin, was the son of Thomas James Chesshyre Tomlin (1867–1935), raised to the nobility in 1929, and his wife Marion Olivia, nee. Waterfield (1867-1948). He studied from 1919 in Oxford at New College without a degree and later devoted himself to sculpture . Tomlin was closely associated with the writers and artists of the Bloomsbury Group .
In 1927 he married the writer Julia Strachey (1901-1979), the niece of the art critic and writer Lytton Strachey , who was one of the leading members of the group and of whom he created a bust. His bust of Virginia Woolf , created in 1931 , which adorns the garden of the Woolf couple at their home, Monk's House in Rodmell , ( Sussex ), and which is also on display in Tavistock Square in the London borough of Bloomsbury, became famous. In 1934 he divorced his wife Julia.
Stephen Tomlin died in London at the age of 35.
