Life
Stephen Wiltshire, also known as "the living camera," was diagnosed with autism at the age of three. In the same year his father died in a motorcycle accident. At the age of four Stephen was referred to the Queensmill School in London, where his interest in drawing was piqued . His drawings were used for communication . At the age of eight, he began drawing cars and cities after earthquakes.
His teacher, Chris Marris, encouraged his talent; with his help Wiltshire learned to speak at the age of nine. At the age of ten, Wiltshire drew a series of pictures called the London Alphabet , a series of London landmarks, one drawing for each letter.
Wiltshire is now a famous artist. His island talent enables him to look at an object and then to draw a very precise and detailed picture. As part of two experiments, after sightseeing flights over London and Rome , he drew detailed panoramic views of both cities. He repeated this with the skyline of Frankfurt as part of the RTL television show Unbelievable! The Strange Show of September 13, 2006 as well as the Hong Kong View.
Wiltshire's work has since been part of several television documentaries, the neurologist Oliver Sacks dedicated to him a chapter in his book An Anthropologist on Mars ( An Anthropologist On Mars ). Important drawings from Wiltshire are shown in “S. Wiltshire, Floating Cities. Venice, Amsterdam, Leningrad and Moscow “, London 1991.
In 2007, Stephen Wiltshire was named Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his achievements .
