Sterijino pozorje is an international theater festival that takes place annually in the Serbian city ​​of Novi Sad . With its competition, it is one of the most important Serbian institutions in its field.

history

The festival was named after the playwright Jovan Sterija Popović . It was founded in 1956 on the occasion of his 150th birthday. Popović was a major Serbian playwright. The best theater productions from Yugoslavia and abroad are presented at the festival. The pieces must come from Yugoslav authors. In the period between 1991 and 1996, i.e. during the civil war , only pieces from Serbia, Montenegro , Macedonia and the so-called Republika Srpska were shown. After the war, the festival reopened to other countries.

At the same time as the festival, an international symposium of theater critics and theater scholars will take place, as will the international triennial for stage and costume designers and finally the international triennial for theater photography.
