Enno Spielhagen (born September 16, 1918 in Höchst am Main as Enno Jürgen Friedrich Spielhagen, † April 12, 1974 in Dudweiler / Saar) was a German broadcaster , presenter and disc jockey and was best known as "Franz" on Radio Luxembourg .

family

Enno Spielhagen was born as the son of the authorized signatory Siegfried Spielhagen (1867-1928) and his wife Anna Catharina de Vries (1888-1969) in Höchst / Main. His grandfather Walther Spielhagen (1822-?) Was the brother of the writer Friedrich Spielhagen (1829-1911). A cousin of Enno Spielhagen was the former 2nd mayor of Wroclaw Wolfgang Spielhagen (1891–1945). His uncle Dr. Friedrich Spielhagen (1864–1931) was the personal physician of Victoria ("Kaiserin Friedrich"), the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Enno Spielhagen was married twice, from the first marriage he had three children. (See family tree right below)

Life

After graduating from high school, Enno Spielhagen served in the German Wehrmacht and took part in several campaigns as an officer (most recently as a first lieutenant ) during World War II . He was wounded three times, two seriously. After his American imprisonment, he initially had a hard time finding a job without having a civilian job and worked, among other things, as a criminal assistant and sales representative. Eventually he had his voice trained and successfully passed the speaking teacher exam. He then became a news anchor for Hessischer Rundfunk in Frankfurt / Main in 1949. When Radio Luxemburg officially started its program in German in 1958 under the direction of Camillo Felgen , Enno Spielhagen switched there in the same year as a radio presenter (disc jockey) and first German and helped to build up the German program. With him, the station's popularity curve rose significantly. Among other things, he moderated "The Blue Hour". His riddle program "7 questions asked Franz" was successful and received a lot of mail from the audience. The name "Franz" arose from the audience's reaction to his sentence: "If you can do schoolwork in jazz, my name is Franz." In 1961 a meeting between "Franz" and listeners of "7 questions asked by Franz" took place in Euskirchen . In 1964 there was a meeting between him and his audience friends in Groß-Felda . Enno Spielhagen also worked as a language teacher in front of the microphone during his time in Luxembourg.

Below is an interview with Enno Spielhagen on the occasion of Radio Luxemburg's 10th birthday party in 1967:

As Franz, Enno Spielhagen recorded three records in the style of a chant:
"I think about you" / "From me to you" (Ariola)
"It only depends" / "Jan, oh, Jan" (DECCA)
"None Home "/" Either way is life "(DECCA)

In 1964, Enno Spielhagen received an offer from Saarländischer Rundfunk to help build the Europawelle Saar and moved to Saarbrücken . He wanted to transfer his easy-going, funny style from Radio Luxemburg there, but at the time it didn't work so well. At Europawelle Saar, he had various programs, and he made a name for himself with listeners and experts in particular with "Critical to record". He also moderated the programs "Zeitvertreib", "Radio-Museum", "Krimi-Rätsel" "The 7 Questions" and "Good evening, dear listeners". His regional television program "As a guest in the studio" was also well received by the audience, where he interviewed the actress and singer Ilse Werner .

Between 1966 and 1972 Enno Spielhagen spoke roles in six radio plays: "Staralluren", "Mord im Nebel", "Dangerous Legacy", "The Lady is Careless", "The Tapes" and "Souvenirs"

On April 12, 1974, Enno Spielhagen died at the age of 55 during heart bypass surgery . There may be complications from a fragment of a bomb stuck in the lungs directly on the heart from a WWII wound.

Record collection

During his time as a disc jockey in Luxembourg and Saarbrücken, Enno Spielhagen put together a record collection with around 34,000 sound carriers (30,000 singles and 4,000 LPs), which his second wife Lilo cataloged on index cards according to keywords and in some cases according to titles and performers. Lilo Spielhagen donated this collection to the Dudweiler City Library in 1983, subject to the conditions laid down in a donation agreement that it must remain in Dudweiler, never be torn apart and be made accessible to the public. Between 1985 and 1993 the collection in the basement of the Bürgerhaus Dudweiler was accessible to everyone, although in the strongest years up to 100 people were interested in it every month and could listen to the tracks or record them on cassettes. After that, visits were discontinued due to a lack of staff. The Saarbrücken-Dudweiler district library was closed on December 31, 2010. In 2018 the record collection was transferred to the Saarbrücken City Library and the section "Record collection Enno Spielhagen" (see "Web links" below) was set up on its website, previously for some of the singles (4,147). These singles can be listened to on site and transferred to a USB stick. To select the singles, the document "Directory of the E-Platten" is available (sorted by artist at the end).
