In grades 12 and 13 or 11 and 12 ( G8 train ) of the upper level in Baden-Württemberg, a subject-specific topic is designated as a focus topic (also: asterisk topic), which can potentially be queried in the Abitur exams . Due to the central high school diploma , these topics are determined in advance. The publication of key topics carries the risk that the lessons will be dominated by these topics too much, which can lead to the following result (so-called backwash effect ): Both students and teachers pay more attention to key topics than other lesson content, non-key topics on the other hand, fade into the background.

In most subjects, certain units of the curriculum are named as focal topics . For the subject German and the foreign languages , the readings that are covered in the examination are determined. In German, topics from the two specified readings are offered, in the foreign language either one of the readings or regional studies is the topic. In music and art , the topics and works are named, knowledge of which is required for the written Abitur examination. In mathematics , the natural sciences and sports , there is no asterisk subject; Here the entire material of the compulsory areas of the course level has to be mastered; the task may be limited to curriculum units. In social studies (or politics), history and religion , two subject areas are given; the student himself chooses the area he wants to work on in the exam.

The Ministry of Culture publishes these topics almost two years in advance.
