Steuermann Holk is a German silent film from 1920 directed by Ludwig Wolff with Paul Wegener in the title role and Asta Nielsen in the female lead.

action

The Hamburg helmsman Holk feels deeply connected to the sea, a genuine fur seal who only really feels at home on the high seas. His good and sensitive nature stands in clear contrast to his powerful appearance and his gripping manner. Holk's heart belongs entirely to the pretty blonde Doris Reese, who wants to wait for him at home on land. He also writes to her, but luck would have it that she did not receive his letter because the address was smeared on it. And so Doris believes that Holk has lost interest in her and eventually marries another man. When Holk found out about this, he was broken, but found consolation in the French whore Isabelle Bouflon.

Even though he knows he won't be the only man in her life, he marries this middle-aged woman. Isabelle Holk, however, is not ready to renounce her previous way of life and begins to cheat him down the line, including with his helmsman colleague Thimm. Holk soon appears to have his life ruined, and in a rage he strangles Isabelle after she challenged and exposed him in a pub. Holk then has to go to jail. When he is released, he sees his girlfriend from before, but she is bound. Holk realizes that his true love will always only belong to the sea and turns his back on the land.

Reviews

Paimann's film lists summed up: “The material and scenery are very good. Photos and game excellent. "

“Nielsen found a tailor-made partner, a high-quality human actor, in Paul Wegener for the film 'Steuermann Holk'. The simple existence of these two people is also filled with deep emotional tension and gives Nielsen one of her great roles as Isabella Holk. "
