Stevan Knićanin

Stevan Petrović Knićanin (Стеван Петровић Книћанин, * 1809 in Knić ; † May 26, 1855 in Belgrade ) was a Serbian general .

Life

Originally a merchant, he moved to Prince Miloš's surroundings in 1832 , over whom he exerted great influence. In 1835 he was brigade captain Josenitza , 1839 District Chief of Smederevo transported. He lost influence under Prince Michael and was even expelled from the country after participating in an uprising against him in 1840.

In 1842 he was, however, of Alexander I called back again. In 1848 he put himself at the head of a volunteer corps of 3,000 men who should come to the Austrian Serbs against the Hungarian rebels to help. He was appointed national colonel, but had to retreat across the Tisza before the Hungarians .

On the orders of his government he returned home in 1849, became a senator, and in 1854 minister of war and advisor to Prince Alexander I. For his services in the fight against the revolution in Hungary, he was made a knight of the Maria Theresa Order .

Stefan Petrović Knićanin died on May 26, 1855 in Belgrade.
