Steve Rodger Waugh (born June 2, 1965 in Canterbury City , Australia ) is a retired Australian cricketer . In 1989 he was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year .

Career

Steve Waugh completed 168 tests for Australia during his career . No other cricketer has participated in more test matches to date. Waugh made his test debut in December 1985 against India in Melbourne. In total, he scored 10927 runs (51.06 runs per wicket ) in his 168 tests played . To date, he is the only cricketer who was able to achieve at least 150 runs in a test innings against all the other nine teams with test status. Steve Waugh is one of only eight cricketers who have achieved at least 10,000 test runs during their career. He is also one of nine Australian players who have a career average of at least 50 runs per wicket when tested. In 1999 he replaced Mark Taylor as captain of the Australian test team. He was the captain of the Australian team in a total of 57 tests, 41 of which were won. No other captain in the history of test cricket has a higher win rate (71.93 percent). Steve Waugh completed his last test for the Australian team in January 2004 against India in Sydney. He also played 325 One-Day Internationals (ODIs) for Australia, in which he scored a total of 7569 runs (32.9 runs per wicket). With the Australian team Waugh took part in four cricket world championships (1987, 1992, 1996 and 1999). He won the title with the team twice, namely in 1987 and 1999. Steve Waugh is the older twin brother of Mark Waugh , also a test cricketer for Australia.

Others

Steve Waugh was named Australian of the Year in 2004. Because of his services to the sport of crickets he was awarded the Order of Australia by Elizabeth II in 2003 . He was formally inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in January 2010.
