Stewart Rome

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Stewart Rome , actually Wernham Ryott Gifford (born January 30, 1886 in Newbury , Berkshire , United Kingdom , † February 26, 1965 there ) was a British actor , a silent film idol of the 10s and 20s.

Life

Rome had started to study civil engineering and had worked in the profession for four years. In 1906 he switched to acting. Rome made his debut in The Girl Behind the Counter . He then went on an extensive tour of Australia and New Zealand .

Back in England, Rome embarked on a film career in 1913 that made the handsome actor one of the most popular screen stars for the next decade and a half. In 1915, he was ranked second in a UK magazine poll for most popular actor, just behind Charles Chaplin . Stewart Rome embodied romantic lovers, perfect gentlemen, elegant adventurers and sporty noblemen of all kinds in his (culturally and historically insignificant) films.

In 1923/24, engagements also took him to German and French studios. For a short time he also tried his luck in Hollywood . With the dawn of the age of talkies, Rome easily made the transition to character. He continued to play leading roles: officers with impeccable manners and correct detective inspectors, venerable spouses and noble characters of all kinds. In 1950, Rome stopped filming and later returned to his birthplace.
