The Misburg branch canal (SKM) in Hanover is a branch of the Mittelland Canal . It is the federal waterway to the Misburg harbor . It lies on the border between the Hanoverian districts of Misburg-Nord and Misburg-Süd .

The branch of the branch canal is at MLK-km 171.142. As a federal waterway up to SKM-km 0.919, for which the newly created waterways and shipping office Mittellandkanal / Elbe-Seitenkanal has been responsible since February 5, 2020 (previously the waterways and shipping office Braunschweig), it leads to the Misburg harbor. From there to km 1.780 is the area of ​​the Misburger Hafengesellschaft . The port area south of the branch canal has a size of approx. 20 ha and a quay length of 280 m.

After the port facility, the branch canal continues to the motorsport port of the Hanoverian Motorboat Club (HMC) with a slipway (at km 2.5) and then branches off to the transshipment point of the Teutonia cement plant and into an approximately 800 m long arm, which is at the fuel factory KWST (Kraul & Wilkening and Stelling) ends.

The total length of the branch canal is approx. 3.3 km.

history

Today's branch canal was initially built from 1914 to 1916 as the Mittelland Canal up to the Misburg harbor and ended with a turning point at km 172.263. After the end of the First World War , a new route was chosen for the further expansion of the Mittelland Canal. Today's branch canal was created from the old stretch.

North of the branch canal, the now decommissioned Deurag-Nerag oil refinery built an oil transshipment port in the 1930s . Since the industrial plant was an important target in World War II, the branch canal was covered by camouflage nets in the last years of the war in order to deprive the approaching bombers of a prominent landmark.

During the operation of the Deurag-Nerag before the turning point, a railway bridge ran across the branch canal , which connected the tracks of the northern part with the siding to the Hanover freight bypass . The bridge was demolished after the refinery was closed. The location and track are still clearly visible today.

The extension of the branch canal for larger types of ships to the Misburg port (corresponding to the extension of the Mittelland Canal) was completed in October 2007. On the south side next to the existing port facilities, a near-natural shallow water zone was created as part of the expansion in the area of ​​the former oil transshipment port .

The water level of the SKM is 33 m with a water depth of 4.0 m (to Misburg harbor, then 3.5 m). There is a turning point at SKM- km 0.800.
