Nature reserve |
The Stichter See is an inland lake in the Lüneburg Heath ( Südheide ) south of Neuenkirchen in the Heidekreis district , Lower Saxony .
Type and origin
The Stichter See is an acidic, relatively nutrient-poor natural body of water and was created by wind blowing, especially in the Vistula Glacial Period , which ended around 11,000 years ago. In the subsoil of the lake, a loamy ground moraine from the previous Saale glaciation prevents the water from seeping away. Such a type of lake is known as Schlatt , in the region as Flatt .
When the water level is high, the Stichter See drains to the northeast into a rift system that represents the uppermost source area of the Bomlitz . In the southwest, the lake is largely silted up. Around 1900 it was still considered to be the largest natural lake on the Lüneburg Heath with a surface area of over 6 hectares (8.5 hectares with islands).
Recreation and nature conservation
The lake is mostly used for local recreation; however, there are restrictions for this. Swimming and ice skating are only allowed on the north bank at your own risk, but not bathing dogs, riding, open fires, tents and loud music. Marked cycle paths lead past the lake shore.
The 2.5 hectare lake with its roughly triangular base and the approximately 140 hectare FFH area Riensheide are part of the Riensheide nature reserve established in 2013 with Stichter See and Sägenmoor .
The authorities are trying to enable nature conservation and those seeking relaxation to coexist.
