The Stieregghütte was an alpine hut in the Swiss municipality of Grindelwald , Canton of Bern . It was at an altitude of 1,650  m. ü. M. on the western slope of the Mattenberg ( Bernese Alps ).

The Stieregghütte was built in 1952 and served as an excursion restaurant and accommodation hut; often as a transit station to the Schreckhornhütte . It was at the foot of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier . At the end of May 2005, a moraine loosened below the Stieregghütte, causing around 300,000 m³ of rubble to slide down into the valley. The reason for this was the progressive retreat of the Lower Grindelwald Glacier. The slope became unstable due to the lack of glacier pressure. The trailing edge of the moraine shifted to a few meters in front of the Stieregghütte, which was then cleared. A few days later, another moraine came off, causing an estimated 100,000 m³ to slide off and bring the edge directly to the hut. The Stieregghütte was then abandoned and burned down in a controlled manner by the Grindelwald fire brigade on June 3, 2005.

As a replacement for the Stieregghütte, the Bäregghütte , located about 100 m higher, was put into operation on June 27, 2006. As a result of the moraine exit, the path to the Schreckhornhütte had to be relocated further up.
