history

The first hut near today's was the Schwarzegghütte at 2520 meters. It was built in 1877 and enlarged to 10 seats in 1886. When extensive renovations were required, the Strahlegghütte was built in 1910 at an altitude of 2691 meters with 30 seats. Both huts remained in operation until 1949, after which the Schwarzegghütte was given up.

In the winter of 1976/77 the Strahlegg hut was badly damaged by an avalanche. Until 1980 it was made temporarily accessible. About 100 m above the old Schwarzegghütte, the new Schreckhornhütte was built in 1980/81. Extensive renovations were necessary on the hut again and again. In 1993 the military built a new entrance to the hut.

Access

The normal ascent is from Grindelwald ( 1000  m ) on an alpine hiking trail in 5½ hours. From the Pfingstegg cable car mountain station ( 1392  m ) the ascent takes about 4½ hours.
