The Glecksteinhütte is located southwest of the Wetterhorn near Grindelwald . It is open all year round, but only managed from mid-June to mid-September.
history
A cave on the Gleckstein served as accommodation for mountaineers until 1870. The mountain guides from Grindelwald then built a stone bivouac with a sloping roof near this rock. This accommodation could accommodate about six climbers. The first hut for 12 people was built after just ten years. It stood about 30 meters above today's hut and was cultivated until 1911.
From 1902 to 1904 the hut, which is still standing today, was built as a hotel. Many guests were expected as the Wetterhorn lift was under discussion. This first aerial cableway in Switzerland was only in operation for a short time. The hotel was bought by the SAC, rebuilt in 1920 and offered 60 places. In 1978 another extension was made and in 2001 extensive facade renovations took place.
Hüttenweg
The ascent to the hut leads from the Gleckstein bus stop over the Ischpfad and past the deep gorge of the upper Grindelwald glacier to the Glecksteinhütte. This takes 2.5 hours. The route has the difficulty T3 on the SAC hiking scale .
