Normal way | West ridge from Wettersattel (WS) |
The Mittelhorn is 3702 m above sea level. M. high summit east of Grindelwald in the Bernese Alps . Together with the similarly high Rosenhorn and Wetterhorn peaks , it forms a striking mountain range, also known as the Wetterhorns .
Although the Mittelhorn is the highest peak in this chain, the Wetterhorn, which is much more striking when viewed from Grindelwald, is usually climbed. The normal route to the Mittelhorn leads (as with the Wetterhorn) either from the Glecksteinhütte over the Willsgrätli (ZS-) or from the Dossenhütte over the Rosenlauigletscher (WS) and the Wellhornsattel at 3478 m above sea level. M. high weather saddle. From there the route leads over the West Ridge (WS) to the summit. Another possibility of ascent in good snow conditions is the so-called Südwestcouloir, an approx. 42 degree steep gully that flows into the southeast ridge (ZS). The summit can also be climbed in winter or spring as part of a ski tour.
