The Foundation Life is a Founded in 1989, German-profit foundation , which in Germany for their support of the panels is known to issue food to the needy. It follows the principle that half of its funds are used in Germany and the other half abroad. According to the audited annual financial statements, the foundation paid out just under 1.2 million euros in 2014 . The foundation was founded with 100,000 marks and, according to its own information, had foundation assets of around 16 million euros in 2012.

Stiftunglife has no employees as all team members work on a voluntary basis. Each team member bears their own travel costs and administrative costs. All incoming payments and all expenses are published transparently on a transparent account with payment receipts and detailed project descriptions.

history

The foundation goes back to a contact between real estate entrepreneur Jürgen Gessner and Karlheinz Böhm in 1984, whose project Menschen für Menschen Gessner supported financially and organizationally in the following years. In 1989 Gessner and his business partner Sven Raap founded the foundation under the name "Life Foundation, non-profit foundation for life and the environment" with foundation assets of initially 100,000 marks.

In 1993 Gessner came into contact with the idea of the food banks and brought together representatives of the groups that had been active in Germany up until then. He initiated the establishment of the Bundesverband Deutsche Tafel , the administration of which was initially taken over by the foundation, with Gessner becoming its first chairman. He also suggested the registration of a figurative mark for the food banks , which is available to all groups that distribute food directly to the needy, are non-denominationally organized, are not affiliated with any party and do not compete with existing food banks. By 1997 the number of boards grew to over 300, the federal association recruited nationwide sponsors from the food trade, but also an automobile manufacturer, a media company and others.

In 2000 the Federal Association of German Food Banks elected its own board of directors, the Life Foundation took a back seat and this year began its organized promotional activities for the local food banks and cooperated with the Lions clubs . In 2007/2008 the construction of a primary school in Ethiopia began in cooperation with Karlheinz Böhm, in the same year work began in Myanmar , which quickly became a priority country.

Areas of activity

In Germany, Stiftunglife supported the food banks for 14 years in the procurement of refrigerated transporters for the collection and distribution of food. A total of 422 vehicle purchases with a total value of 20 million euros were funded. The funding program divided the acquisition costs of 33,000 euros evenly between the food banks, the local Lions clubs and Stiftunglife. After the actual air pollution from diesel vehicles became known in the so-called diesel scandal , Stiftunglife discontinued the funding program in 2017.

In Germany and Austria, Stiftunglife works together with Circus Roncalli . If the costs are shared, children from socially disadvantaged families are invited to visit the circus when it is in their city. Stiftunglife also promotes healthy eating initiatives in Germany and is involved in a variety of ways in the integration of refugees

Abroad, the focus in Myanmar is on children, schools and students, solar lamps and solar / water systems and drinking water treatment. All projects are designed for sustainable collaboration. Each project is visited and assessed once or twice a year. The Swimming Doctors has been operating a swimming doctor's practice in the Irrawaddy delta since 2010 . German doctors support their Burmese colleagues through regular cooperation on board.

For the projects schools, solar lamps, water treatment and also in the floating doctor's practice, the recipients each pay a small contribution, which is multiplied by investments from foundation funds or can be spent by elected representatives on site for community tasks.

Until 2012, Stiftunglife also supported a hospital in Ethiopia that was originally set up by people for people. Other completed projects are the construction of a total of 600 fishing boats for fishing families who lost their livelihoods in the tsunami and storm disasters in 2004 , 2008 and 2010 .
