Stigma ( ancient Greek στίγμα , plural stigmata ) literally means "stab, point, wound or branding" and generally stands for
- a conspicuous, sometimes negatively assessed characteristic, see mark or blemish (eyesore)
- a pathologically typical physical appearance or expression (e.g. liver skin signs )
in particular for:
- a replica of the wounds of Jesus Christ on the body of a person, see stigmatization
- a conspicuous feature as an expression of stigmatization ("social stigma", historically also: shame )
- Stigma (psychoanalysis) , a psychosomatic symptom that may appear during treatment
- Stigma (psychiatry) , a psychiatric phenomenon that can indicate certain disorders
- the vascular spot on the ovarian follicle
- the sensory organelle of some protists, which helps direct them towards the light, see eye spot
- an opening of the tracheal system in arthropods, see trachea (invertebrates)
- a portion of the stamp of a flower, often scar called
- in ancient times the Greeks and Romans burned a mark on the slave
