Stigma ( ancient Greek στίγμα , plural stigmata ) literally means "stab, point, wound or branding" and generally stands for

in particular for:

  • a replica of the wounds of Jesus Christ on the body of a person, see stigmatization
  • a conspicuous feature as an expression of stigmatization ("social stigma", historically also: shame )
  • Stigma (psychoanalysis) , a psychosomatic symptom that may appear during treatment
  • Stigma (psychiatry) , a psychiatric phenomenon that can indicate certain disorders
  • the vascular spot on the ovarian follicle
  • the sensory organelle of some protists, which helps direct them towards the light, see eye spot
  • an opening of the tracheal system in arthropods, see trachea (invertebrates)
  • a portion of the stamp of a flower, often scar called
  • in ancient times the Greeks and Romans burned a mark on the slave
