Stock solution

Under a stock solution , as a stock solution referred to is meant in chemical and biological laboratories, a solution which serves as the basis for other solutions.

A stock solution is always more concentrated than the working solution. A larger volume of the working solution can be produced from a stock solution at any time by simple dilution, without having to prepare the working solution from its components again. Stock solutions are usually 10, 100 or 1000 times concentrated. From a 10-fold concentrated stock solution is obtained, the working solution by a part of the stock solution with nine mixed parts of the solvent (for example water). The stock solution is usually kept in large, standardized volumes. The most common stock solutions are created for buffer solutions , but also for reagents such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The stock solution is also used in analytical chemistry for titration .

A stock solution is also used to describe concentrated developer solutions for film development in photography .
