The Sapporo tram ( Japanese 札幌 市 電 , Sapporo shiden , English Sapporo Streetcar ) is a tram network in Sapporo on the island of Hokkaidō in Japan . The tram has been operated by the Sapporo City Traffic Office (Japanese 札幌 市 交通局Sapporo-shi kōtsū-kyoku ) since 1927 . The network is often referred to as shiden ( 市 電 , urban tram / light rail) by the residents .

history

The forerunner was put into operation in 1910 as the "stone horse railway Sapporo" ( 札幌 石材 馬車 鉄 道 , Sapporo sekizai basha-tetsudō ) with a gauge of 762 mm and shut down in 1918/19. Electrical operation began in 1918 with the current gauge on a network with a simplified structure.

In the period that followed, the network was gradually expanded. At its peak in 1958, it had a total length of 25 km in 11 routes and 7 lines. It was subsequently downsized due to the growing automobile traffic and the opening of the Sapporo urban subway .

As a special feature, diesel-powered vehicles were used on a section between 1959 and 1967 until the new lines were fully electrified.

On December 20, 2015, the closure of the ring between the former terminus Susukino and Nishi-Yon-chōme was opened as the first new line in over 50 years. In contrast to the rest of the network, the new route was not built in the middle of the street, but rather in a lateral position.

Further new lines are under investigation.

business

Officially there are currently four routes. These are collectively referred to as the Ichijō-Yamahana tram line ( 一条 ・ 山 鼻 軌道 線 , Ichijō / Yamahana-kidōsen ) or simply the tram line ( 軌道 線 , kidōsen ).

  • Ichijō line ( 一条 線 ): Nishi-Yon-chōme - Nishi-Jūgo-chōme
  • Yamahana-Nishi Lineage ( 山 鼻 西 線 ): Nishi-Jūgo-chōme - Chūō-Toshokan-mae
  • Yamahana lineage ( 山 鼻 線 ): Chūō-Toshokan-mae - Susukino
  • Toshin line ( 都 心 線 ): Susukino - Nishi-Yon-chōme

Almost all trams cross the entire network as a ring line clockwise (outside) or counter (inside) clockwise. Other relations are:

  • Nishi-Yon-chōme - Nishisen-Jūroku-jō
  • Nishi-Yon-chōme - Chūō-Toshokan-mae
  • Chūō-Toshokan-mae - Susukino

Mainly high-floor vehicles from various series of the post-war period (1958-'88) are used. However, 3 three-part low-floor articulated wagons have also been procured since 2012.

The trams run every seven to eight minutes during the day and every three minutes between the stations Nishi-Yon-Chôme and Nishisen-Jūroku-Jō during peak working hours.

A ticket costs 170 ¥ . The magnetic With You Card , which is paid for in advance, is recognized in the tram, just like in the subway. Since June 2013, the electronic Kitaca card of the JR Hokkaido Railway Company has also been recognized. Day tickets (only for the tram) are only sold for weekends and holidays at ¥ 310.
