In the 1990s, Kaetsunō Tetsudō initially got into economic difficulties due to falling passenger numbers. After direct connections to Toyama City were broken, the company ran into financial difficulties. In 2001 a loss of 264 million yen had to be reported and a decision was made to close the entire route. The cities of Takaoka and Shinminato (now Imizu) therefore decided to found a new company, which was founded on March 30, 2001 as Man'yōsen, whose shares each 30.06% in the city of Takaoka, the city of Imizu and the Toyama prefecture lie.

Man'yōsen took over the entire line routes on February 14, 2002 from Kaetsunō Tetsudō and has been a railway company since April 1, 2002.

The name Man'yō comes from the first great Japanese poetry compilation Man'yōshū , since the poet Ōtomo no Yakamochi , who compiled this collection, was governor of the province of Etchū , which roughly corresponds to today's Toyama prefecture, and dedicated several poems to it.

stretch

The network consists of just one line, which begins at Takaoka station and crosses the city in a northerly direction (partly single-track), flush with the street. With the crossing of the JR Himi Line (氷 見 es) it goes on a single track eastwards to the intermediate station Rokudōji (六 渡 寺). From there to the terminus Koshinokata (越 ノ 潟) the line is licensed as a railway. All trains run from Takaoka Station to Koshinokata in Imizu.
