Tram in Malta
The tram in Malta was electrically operated and ran since February 23, 1905. The legal carrier was a company founded in 1903. It was a meter-gauge network. The vehicles were driven with double-deck cars that were open to the sides and on the upper deck.
The tram initially ran on two lines, which was later supplemented by a third:
- Valletta - Marsa - Paola - Cospicua
- Valletta - Ħamrun - Qormi - Żebbuġ
- Valletta - Ħamrun - Birkirkara
An originally planned extension of the line to Mosta does not seem to have been built.
Some of the routes ran parallel to the Valletta – Mdina railway line , which probably ruined both transport systems after the advent of automobiles and buses . The tram service was stopped after the bankruptcy of the company on December 15, 1929 and the infrastructure was later dismantled.
