The Hörschel road tunnel is located in the west of Thuringia on the northern edge of the Hörschel district of Eisenach and is a road tunnel on the L 1021 state road between Eisenach and Herleshausen .

The tunnel was built between 1996–1998, it is about 230 m long and consists of a horizontal tunnel tube with a slightly curved line . The tunnel passes under a small wooded mountain spur at the foot of the Hörschelberg . A geologically significant fault zone had to be crossed with the “Hörschel basalt dike” in the shell limestone layers.

The reason for the tunnel construction was the start of operations at the Eisenach Opel factory , which relies on a smooth supply of supplier parts via the federal motorway 4 , Herleshausen exit and insisted on the expansion of the L 1021 state road.

In this context, the Werra crossing of the L 1021 and the tunneling of the Hörschelberg was necessary, as the topographical situation was further complicated by the motorway route (with Hörschel bridge over the Werra valley ), the Thuringian railway route with its own Werra bridge and the mouth of the Hörsel river .

In September 1998 the tunnel through the Hörschelberg near Hörschel, the new Werra bridge and the bypass road around Stedtfeld were officially opened to traffic.
