The Stradiņš University Riga ( Latvian : Rīgas Stradiņa universitāte ; English : Riga Stradins University ), RSU for short , is a state university in the Latvian capital Riga with a total of 6,000 students and around 360 academic employees.

history

The Stradiņš University in Riga goes back to the medical faculty of the Latvian University of Riga, founded in 1919 . In 1923 the Riga University of Applied Sciences was renamed the University of Latvia (UL). In 1950 the medical faculty was transferred to the Riga Medical Institute and in 1990 it was renamed the Latvian Medical Academy (AML). On June 13, 2002 the academy was officially renamed Stradiņš University Riga (RSU). Rector is Prof. Jānis Gardovskis (as of 2009).

University

Around 3,500 students are trained at 8 faculties at the university; including 231 doctoral students (as of 2006). English-language study programs in medicine and stomatology have been offered in 8 to 12 semesters since 1990, and now also in pharmacy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and nursing. The RSU has been participating in the Erasmus initiative since 2003 .

There are university partnerships, e.g. to the Otto Friedrich University of Bamberg , the University of Trier , the Berlin Charité and the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven .
