The Stradun in Dubrovnik (translated "Big Street") is the largest main street in the old town of Dubrovnik (historical name Ragusa ) in Croatia .

The Stradun (also called Placa [ ˈplatsa ]) got its current appearance after the great earthquake in 1667 , when Dubrovnik was quickly rebuilt. The varied character of the former palaces on the old Stradun was replaced by a systematic construction of two rows of baroque stone houses of the same height with uniform fronts. On the ground floor of each of these houses, the Senate of the Republic ordered the construction of several similar shops , expressing the concern of the city administration for the revival of trade.

This street is also the shortest connection between the western city gate, the Pile Gate , and the eastern city gate, the Ploče Gate . It was created at the end of the 11th century when the shallow strait that separated the former small island of Lave with the settlement built on it from the other settlement on the mainland was filled in. The Stradun got its function in the 12th century, when both settlements were incorporated into a single city wall .

All major festivities and processions take place there today , but this street is also the trading artery of the old city center of Dubrovnik.
