Strancally Castle

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Strancally Castle ( Irish Caisleán shron Chaillí , dt. "Castle Witches nose") is a country house on the banks of the Munster Blackwater in Ireland County Waterford north of the town of Youghal in County Cork .

history

The original Strancally Castle was built by Raymond FitzGerald . Later, there is evidence of Spaniards living there who lured local landowners to a banquet and then threw them through a secret trap door into a flooded cellar. When this murder became known, the Spaniards were located and the castle was destroyed.

The current building was John Kelly , Member of Parliament for Clonmel and High Sheriff of County Waterford from 1819-1820 , built around 1830 by architects James and George Richard Pain . The country house stands in front of the ruins of the old castle.

In 1856, the 24-year-old George Whitelocke Lloyd bought the country house with 20 km² of surrounding land from a rich Anglo-Irish family of manufacturers. For the years 1859-1860 he was appointed High Sheriff of County Waterford. His son, "William Whitelocke Lloyd," was an Army officer who fought in the Zulu War in 1879 and was an accomplished artist.

Later the property came into the possession of the Irish Land Commission , which sold the land piece by piece and eventually the country house with the remaining 64 hectares.
