Terryglass Castle

Terryglass Castle (also Old Court called Irish Caisleán thir DHA Ghlas or to tSean-Chúirt ) is a solid house on the northeast corner of Lough Derg in Ireland's County Tipperary , which as a National Monument applies.

history

An early Christian monastery founded here in the 6th century Columban of Iona , who died around the year 552.

Terryglass Castle had John Marshall built in 1219-1232 . In 1232, according to the royal records, he owed significant debts to King Henry III of England . The castle and the surrounding land were used as security for the repayment of the debts.

The castle should change hands frequently. In the years 1275-1276 it belonged to Nicholas Dunheaued , 1299 Theobald le Botiller, 2nd Chief Butler of Ireland and 1290 William Marshall . Richard Og de Burgh, 2nd Earl of Ulster , was the owner in 1323 and James Butler in 1589.

Terryglass Castle contributed to the diocese's tax revenue in 1302–1307, according to tax sources, and the report of the royal visit in 1615 mentions that it had an enclosed sanctuary. In the cadastral survey 1654–1656, however, only one church cemetery is mentioned.
