Strategic Airlines SA was a Luxembourg charter airline based in Luxembourg City and based at Luxembourg Airport .

history

The Luxembourg Strategic Airlines was created as a consequence of the loss of the operating license of the French Strategic Airlines . After losing the French operating license, the Australian parent company decided to re-establish the French offshoot in Luxembourg and apply for a certificate for aircraft operation there, the Airbus A320s of French Strategic Airlines should then fly under Luxembourg registration and be stationed at Luxembourg Airport . The Luxembourg operating license was issued, after which the French Strategic subsidiary flew again from October 2010. Initially, two of the three aircraft remained stationed in Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle , while only one aircraft was based in Luxembourg.

Flight operations were initially resumed with an Airbus A320-200 with the new aircraft registration LX-STA , but the fleet was strengthened in summer 2011 and the two other Airbus A320s of the French predecessor ( LX-STB and LX-STC ) were reactivated and integrated into the fleet.

Although the company was based in Luxembourg, in the summer of 2011 all flights were operated from the base at Gatwick Airport near London , mainly to destinations in Greece . In the summer of 2011, Strategic in Luxembourg also experienced scandals when it was discovered that there were only 35 employment contracts in total, while Strategic Airlines claimed it had 50 employees. It was speculated that some employees were employed without employment contracts. In addition, irregularities were suspected at the start of operations. Strategic denied using staff without employment contracts.

The fact that an airline, which had lost its French operating license due to safety concerns, was able to restart with an operating license from Luxembourg only a few weeks later, led to criticism of the Luxembourg aviation authority . This defended itself with the fact that the application was made before the loss of the French certificate and that the authority Strategic Airlines had subjected to a more stringent examination, which did not allow any objections.

At the end of 2011, Strategic Airlines Luxembourg once again made negative local headlines. The reason for this was the flight connections to Erbil in Iraq and, above all, Kabul in Afghanistan , which began on November 15 on behalf of NATO for military transport . The crews had to carry out the flights and were not asked whether they were available for such missions, but were simply assigned to the flights. It was also not discussed with the unions.

Air Australia , the Australian parent company and other companies in the group went into bankruptcy in early 2012 , whereupon the highly indebted Air Australia - the former Australian Strategic Airlines - ceased operations. However, the Luxembourg subsidiary was not affected by the closure of the holding company.

In October 2012, Strategic Airlines SA had to cease flight operations for financial reasons, as an important charter contract relating to two of the three Airbus A320s had been lost and the airline was unable to find new employment for the capacities that had become available.
