Strathtyrum House is a mansion in the Scottish town of St Andrews in the Fife Council Area . In 1973 the building was included as an individual monument in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Of the associated outer buildings, the mausoleum, the pigeon tower and the stables are classified separately as Category B buildings. The sundial, on the other hand, is classified as a category C monument.

history

The Strathtyrum estate was owned by the Archbishops of St Andrews . After the Reformation, a family owned Inglis Strathtyrum. Archbishop James Sharp acquired the property in 1669. The present mansion was built between 1720 and 1740. In 1782 James Cheape , son of the local laird , bought Strathtyrum on his return from Bombay , where he worked for the East India Company . Between 1805 and 1815, Strathtyrum House was expanded. In 1821, Cheape added more land on the north side. His great-nephew, also named James Cheape , sold this part of the estate to theThe Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews priced at £ 5000. In 1993, the Strathtyrum Links golf course was established there as part of St Andrews Links .

The three-story mansion stands largely isolated on the north-west edge of St Andrews. The east-facing main facade is nine axes wide. In the center emerges a three-axis central projection with a rounded Doric portico with a closing stone balustrade . The risalit closes with a triangular gable . The final hipped roof is covered with slate.
