Straton House

Straton House is a residential building in the Scottish town of Montrose in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

At the location of Straton House there was a previous building, the owners of which can be traced back to the year 1663. However, when it was built is unclear. Straton House was built in 1762 by John Straton on the foundations of the previous building. Originally his property was more spacious. Today it is surrounded on all sides. The prerequisite for the sale of the surrounding property in the course of the 18th century was the establishment of a gate passage between buildings 9-11 Castle Gate , which today offers the only access to Straton House.

The building stands in the middle of a square in the historic center of Montrose. It is surrounded on all sides by residential buildings and cannot be seen from the street. The two- to three-story Straton House has an L-shaped floor plan. Its masonry is made of brick , with the older rubble foundation visible. The facades are usually asymmetrical. The two-winged wooden portal on the west side closes with a fighter window . It has a curved canopy mounted on wrought iron consoles . The east facade facing the garden is five axes wide and has two glass entrance doors, wooden cornices and leaded glass windows. The steep roofs are covered with gray slate. Terracotta tiles adorn the ridge . In the interior, the rooms on the first floor are to be emphasized, which are decorated with Corinthian pilasters , crowns and friezes .
