The Matchstick Bridge is a reinforced concrete bridge over the Langen Grund near Klingenberg in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district in Saxony . It was built in the years 1910–1911 as a wooden railway bridge and in 1924 it was rebuilt as a road bridge in a similar form. Today a hiking trail leads over the technical monument.

location

The bridge is located south of Klingenberg or east of Neuklingenberg on the Höhenweg after the Klingenberg dam . To the north, the Höhenweg leads from the local connecting road Klingenberg-Neuklingenberg through an avenue of old Norway and sycamore maples.

description

The matchstick bridge is characterized by its extraordinary filigree design.

history

Railway bridge

For the construction of the Klingenberg dam, a narrow-gauge industrial railway was laid between 1910 and 1911. The 3.7 km long route led from Klingenberg-Colmnitz station past Neuklingenberg to the southeast and then south on the slope of the Weißeritz valley to the construction site. On the last-mentioned section, it was necessary to overcome the long reason. For this purpose, a 60 m long and 18 m high wooden bridge construction was built from tree trunks by Transylvanian carpenters, which was named Matchstick Bridge because of its construction . From June 26, 1911 to June 23, 1914, the Werkbahn transported lime, sand and other building materials to the dam construction site.

Road bridge

The wooden matchstick bridge was demolished in 1924 when a driveway was being built on the former railway line . In its place, Dyckerhoff & Widmann AG erected a reinforced concrete structure based on the old wooden bridge in the same year.

In 1992 the bridge was technically checked and overhauled by Schachtbau Nordhausen GmbH.
