Etymology and history of research

Alfred Malherbe described the Strickland woodpecker under the name Picus (Leuconotopicus) Stricklandi . The type specimen was collected in Mexico and generously made available to Malherbe by Hugh Edwin Strickland (1811-1853) during a stay in London. The species name is also dedicated to him. The genus Leuconotopicus was introduced with the new species. The name is a Greek word from "leukos λευκος " for "white", "nōton νωτον " for "black" and "pikos πικος " for "woodpecker". Occasionally it is listed in the literature under the genus Picoides Lacepede , 1799.
