Striga dalzielii is a plant type from the genus Striga in the family of broomrape plants (Orobanchaceae).

description

Striga dalzielii is a 19 to 35 cm high, parasitic , annual plant . It grows stiffly upright, is unbranched, scaly and densely ciliate with 1 mm long, diverging trichomes . The stem is rectangular. The leaves are 15 to 30 × 4 to 7 mm in size, they are two-veined, linear, have a serrated edge, are opposite and are reduced towards the top on the stem. They are as long as or longer than the internodes .

The flowers are perched and overlapping like roof tiles in a very dense, spike-shaped inflorescence that is shorter than the vegetative shoot. The flowers are each accompanied by two bracts , these are 8 to 18 × 4 mm long, linear, stiff haired on the edges and the central rib and enclose the calyx .

The calyx is ten-ribbed and 5 to 8 mm long. The calyx tube is 3 to 5 mm long and covered with five unequal calyx lobes. These are lanceolate, 2 to 3 mm long and thus shorter than the calyx tube. The crown is purple. The corolla tube is 10 to 20 mm long, curved, widened above the calyx and hairy glandular. The lobes of the lower lip are 3 to 8 × 3 to 5 mm in size and are blunt. The upper lip is 3 to 6 × 6 mm and notched.

Occurrence

The species occurs in Mali , Guinea and Nigeria . It grows there in moist savannah areas .
