Strigoi is an English death metal and crustcore band from Suffolk and Yorkshire that was formed in 2018.

history

After guitarist and singer Gregor Mackintosh ( Paradise Lost ) had finished his previous project Vallenfyre after the release of the planned three albums in 2018, he founded Strigoi a few days after the last Vallenfyre concert in September 2018. The band takes its name from the beings of the same name from Romanian mythology. A short time later, Chris Casket joined the band as bassist, and he and Mackintosh knew each other through their work together at Vallenfyre. In August 2019 the group signed a record deal with Nuclear Blast , which resulted in their debut album Abandon All Faith being released in November . Here you can hear the Paradise Lost drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, although he is not a permanent member. The album was recorded at Mackintosh's Black Planet Studio from January to March 2019. This was followed by appearances in which the drummer Guido Zima Montanarini and the guitarist Sam Kelly-Wallace (ex-Vallenfyre) helped out.

style

Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard stated in his review of Abandon All Faith that Vallenfyre's style, consisting of Death Metal and Crustcore, is largely continued. The difference between the two bands is small, as both have an "icy sound" and a "pitch-black atmosphere". There are also sonic parallels to Doom , early Amebix and Bolt Thrower . The music is not original, but intense and entertaining. In an interview in the same issue, Mackintosh stated with Schiffmann that Strigoi should originally go more towards Doom Metal before his attitude towards it changed while writing the album. With Strigoi, however, it is not he, but Chris Casket who is responsible for the lyrics. This is mainly about religion, but topics such as politics or the serial killer Ion Rîmaru are also taken up. Petra Schurer from Metal Hammer also reviewed the album and found that it is mainly classified as Death Metal. There are similarities to Paradise Lost and songs occasionally have elements from Punk or Doom Metal.
