Straw, coal and bean

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Straw, coal and bean is an aetological fluctuation ( ATU 295). It is in the children's and house tales of the Brothers Grimm at position 18 (KHM 18) and from the 3rd edition is based primarily on Burkard Waldis ' poem Esopus . Until the second edition it was called Strohhalm, Kohl und Bohne auf der Reise .

Contents (edition 1812)

Straw, coal and beans want to travel. When they come to a stream, the straw lies over it, the coal wants to go over, but burns it, so that both of them perish. The bean slips, swells in the water and bursts. A tailor sews them together. Since then, all beans have had a seam.

According to another story , the bean first goes over and then bursts with laughter over coal and straw.

Contents (last edition)

While cooking, a poor old woman sprouts a straw, a bean and a coal that decide to stick together. When they come to a stream, the straw lies over it, the coal wants to cross, but burns the straw and both of them fall into it. The bean bursts with laughter. A tailor sews them together. Since then, beans have had a seam.

origin

Wilhelm Grimm heard the Schwank probably in 1808 from Dorothea Catharina Wild in Kassel. In the original handwritten version, it appears as No. 5, then always as No. 18, the content from the 3rd edition being influenced by Burkard Waldis ' poem Esopus .

The text is similar to the Russian fairy tale of the bubble, straw and bast shoe ( Russian Пузырь, Соломинка и Лапоть ). See also The Three Woodcutters .
