Altenstadt stocking museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Altenstadt stocking museum is a museum in the municipality of Altenstadt in the Weilheim-Schongau district in Upper Bavaria .

The municipality of Altenstadt is an important location for the Bellinda fine stocking factories , which were founded in 1950 by Fred Vatter and his childhood friend Otto Palme. The name resulted from the latinization of the place of birth Fred Vatters, Schönlinde in Bohemia .

The stocking museum is located in a side room of the factory outlet in Altenstadt. It can be viewed free of charge during sales opening times. In the museum, the history of the stocking and its manufacture is clearly explained using exhibits. Special features are the exhibitions of hand-knitted stockings and socks from 1850 or the world's first nylon stocking from 1940. Perlon was developed as an alternative to nylon and, due to its properties, was declared a "war material" during World War II .
