Strydegor is a metal band from Schwerin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The band describes their music as melodic death metal . The texts deal with everyday problems such as grief, anger and fears combined with writings from Nordic sagas and myths.
history
Beginnings and first successes
Strydegor was founded in 2007 by singer and guitarist Florian Kunde, bassist Clemens Thieke, drummer Sven Martinek and guitarist Slava Giebel in Hagenow .
After the musicians were already active in another band, it was decided to start over under the name Strydegor and play melodic death metal from that point on .
In spring 2008 the band released their first demo album Legends of Midgard and in autumn 2008 the EP Midwinter's Eve.
Back on Ancient Traces and Death of Slava Giebels
This was followed by a contract with the Austrian label CCP-Records and the release of the 2009 debut album Back on Ancient Traces in 2009.
Two weeks before the publication of Back on Ancient Traces , guitarist Slava Giebel died on the night of May 23, 2009 in a traffic accident in Bresegard near Hagenow.
With the help of Jan Reichardt, Oliver Reimer and Julian Dierkes, the band decided to play their concerts and to continue the work with the band in honor of Slava.
In the Shadow of Remembrance and a new beginning
In 2012 the follow-up album In the Shadow of Remembrance followed, also via CCP-Records, which deals with the loss of the guitarist Slavas and describes the cohesion between brothers, but with Frank Schneider ("Fränk the Tänk") from the band Full Assault a guitarist was found for live performances and one played e.g. B. at the Metalfest in Dessau with big names like Megadeth or Behemoth , as well as many concerts in Germany, Austria and Belgium. In October 2012, David Holst was introduced as a permanent guitarist.
Separation from Sven Martinek and work on the third studio album
Due to personal differences, Strydegor decided in spring 2013 to end the collaboration with her long-time drummer Sven Martinek and found a live replacement in Norman Mirs, then finally in Simon Dierkes, brother of Julian Dierkes and friend of the band. However, Dierkes had to leave the band for professional reasons before the studio recordings and so the band found a suitable live and studio drummer in Christian Eggers to carry out the planned recordings for the third album Enraged .
Enraged, line- up changes and further plans
The recordings for Enraged took place in the LFF project studio with producer Martin Schulz in Neubrandenburg . For the mixing, Steffen Nevermann from the Shredsound Studio Rostock and for the mastering Jonas Kjellgren, who with his Black Lounge Studios has already worked with bands like Hypocrisy and Immortal , could be won over.
The album was released worldwide on September 12, 2014 via the 7hard Records label and an extensive release tour has been announced. Shortly before the release, David Holst decided to leave the band and devote himself to other projects in his life. Live guitarist Patrik Witzke, who was responsible for the band's promotional photos in the past, joined in for the other concerts.
Christian Eggers also announced his departure after the publication of Enraged , due to personal differences and to be able to spend more time with his family. At the beginning of 2015, Daniel Hauschild (guitar) and Immanuel Promnitz (drums) completed the band's line-up and made it public on Facebook. The release of a new album is scheduled for 2016. In July 2016, the band announced via a public Facebook post that they had separated from their bassist and founding member Clemens Thieke. Martin Schmidt, who had previously appeared as a live guitarist, was introduced as the new bass player on Facebook in December 2016 and work on the new album continued with him.
style
In the early days of the band, Strydegor played Viking Metal, which was based on bands such as Amon Amarth , Unleashed or Ensiferum . Over time, they began to integrate influences beyond their musical horizon, to let acoustic accents flow into the music and also to incorporate elements of the classic "Gothenburg sound" such as In Flames and Dark Tranquility into their songs. Guitar parts with a touch of black metal are combined with intense drums, double-bass rhythms, heroic melodies meet brutal death metal and in some of the songs there is also clear vocals by singer Florian Kunde in addition to the typical growl vocals.
The variety in the music with the combination of death metal and atmospheric acoustic sounds is the unique selling point of Strydegor. The texts are mostly written in English and describe today's human problems such as grief, anger or fears related to the time of the Vikings with reference to Nordic mythologies. Strydegor publicly distances himself from any extreme ideas.
