Stuart Campbell McDonald (born May 2, 1978 ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Born in 1978, McDonald grew up in Milton of Campsie . He studied law at the University of Edinburgh and then worked as a solicitor . He later worked for the NHS as well as for nonprofits. McDonald is a member of Unite the Union .

Political career

At the age of 16, McDonald joined the SNP. For over a decade he was involved in his party's regional campaign activities and assisted MEPs in the Scottish Parliament Shirley-Anne Somerville and Jim Eadie . In the run-up to the referendum on Scottish independence in 2014 , McDonald moved to the management center of the Yes Scotland campaign , which promoted an independent Scotland.

In the British general election in 2015 , McDonald ran for the SNP in the constituency of Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East . He ran against Labor MP Gregg McClymont , who had represented the constituency in the British House of Commons since 2010 . After the SNP gained massive votes in these elections, McDonald achieved the highest percentage of votes and subsequently moved into the House of Commons for the first time. He is a member of the Interior Committee and deals with the issues of poverty and job creation. Furthermore, he campaigns against the use of fracking technology.

Despite losing votes, McDonald maintained his mandate in the early general election in 2017 .
