The Film Studienkreis (SKF) was founded in 1966 at the Ruhr University in Bochum and is one of the oldest student film clubs in Germany. In addition, it has established itself as part of the North Rhine-Westphalian cultural scene. Since 1966, students have financially organized a cinema program every semester. The SKF realized film series with various university and student institutions or the presentation of films in addition to certain events.

Members

The SKF is run by voluntary members who have often studied at the Ruhr University Bochum and thus got to know the association. While originally only students were permitted as members according to the association's statutes, today members from outside the universities are also welcome. To become a member, you only have to introduce yourself to the members and express your interest. Members enjoy the advantages of free entry and cheaper drinks and snacks and only have to qualify by providing services to be able to vote on the program selection.

In addition to the regular members, certain posts are assigned that take care of the various aspects of administration.

Library

Until 2019, the Film Studienkreis had a library with an extensive magazine archive. All kinds of publications were collected there and made available free of charge. Numerous rare and long out-of-print publications on the film trade were also found. Due to a change in the allocation of space at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum , the library had to be slowly closed from 2018, as no more space could be provided for it. Some of the collected writings were given away to interested parties and the majority were donated to other libraries. The poster archive was also closed in a major campaign on November 14, 2018, when the posters were given away on the university campus. Since then, SKF has been planning to regularly give away the posters that the film distributors send out annually, which they announce on their social media channels.

Cooperations and special events

In addition to the regular demonstrations, the SKF holds lectures, symposiums and special events. Well-known directors, film scholars and authors have already been guests at the Ruhr University. B. Tom Tykwer , Matthias Müller , Georg Seeßlen or Hellmuth Costard .

The Film Studienkreis works with other institutions to promote the medium of film at the university. He supports the Turkish Film Festival, the film events of the Red Ruhr University, and awarded a special prize, the so-called "Stuffi", at the Bochum Video Festival from 1999 until it was closed in 2011.

The SKF is involved in a variety of collaborations, including a. 2009 BoRorossia, 2009 cooperation on the occasion of the year of astronomy with Susanne Hüttemeister from the Zeiss Planetarium Bochum (film: CONTACT with lecture), 2010 with Ralph Tollrian, head of the chair for evolutionary ecology and animal biodiversity at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology (film : OUR OCEANS with lecture and discussion), 2010 cooperation with the Amnesty International University Group and the AG Human Rights of the Faculty of Medicine (film: WÜSTENBLUME with lecture and discussion), every year at the summer festival of the Ruhr-Uni-Bochum (with free children's film + evening film) . There are regular collaborations with the project "RUB confesses color", in which films are shown that deal with tolerance issues such as racism and homophobia. With this, SKF positions itself politically in the left spectrum. In 2018, the first cooperation with UNICEF took place, which should be continued in the subsequent semesters until today. For collaborative partners of this type, SKF usually donates the proceeds to the collaborative partner.

Publications

The SKF engages in scientific engagement with the medium of film by publishing publications. The most important include "Sexuality in Film", "Peter Lilienthal", "Rosa von Praunheim", "Peter Greenaway", "Hal Hartley" and "Fire on the Ruhr". In 1998 he published his first book: "To them the breath of death blows" is a compilation of texts on the genre of the spaghetti western with a detailed, if not complete, filmography.

Internships

Since 2009, students have had the opportunity to do internships in the Film Study Group as part of the so-called optional area of the Ruhr University Bochum. The main focus of these internships is the participation in public relations and the support of the performances. Interns are always given the opportunity to introduce new ideas of their own and to discuss the choice of program with them.
