Organization and financing

The Studierendenwerk is a legally independent, direct state institution. The legal basis for the work of the student union is the "Law on Student Services in the State of North Rhine-Westphalia" of September 16, 2014.

According to Section 3 of the NRW Student Union Act (StWG) in the version applicable from October 1, 2014, the Studierendenwerk has two organs:

  • Board of Directors
  • Managing directors

The board of directors decides according to § 6 StWG u. a. on the articles of association, contribution regulations and the choice of auditor. It decides on the business plan, determines the annual financial statements and relieves the management. The board of directors monitors the management in particular with regard to organization, accounting and compliance with the principles of financing and economic management.

The management as the second body leads the student union and conducts its business on its own responsibility. She represents the Studierendenwerk in court and in legal transactions, is responsible for the business plan and is the superior of the staff (Section 9 StWG).

The Studierendenwerk Düsseldorf is mainly financed from

  • self-generated income from gastronomy revenues (approx. € 8.0 million, 2018),
  • self-generated income from rental income (approx. € 13.0 million, 2018),
