Sturm von Sturmeck

Sturm von Sturmeck (also French Sturm de Sturmeck ) is one of the noble families led by the name Sturm, which was detectable in the area around Strasbourg in Alsace until the 17th century . The best-known representative of this evangelical family was the Strasbourg councilor, mayor and founder of the grammar school, which later became a university, Jakob Sturm von Sturmeck (1489–1553).

Since the middle of the 13th century there is evidence of a noble family called Sturm in Strasbourg , which probably received the title of nobility through the granting of imperial pledges by Rudolf I (HRR) . The Sturm von Sturmeck line has been traceable since 1388, with the addition of "von Sturmeck" to distinguish itself from other branches of the family. The addition "von Sturmeck" was no longer used by the family in the 16th century, only Jakob Sturm von Sturmeck used the addition again from 1620, possibly because of a new imperial nobility letter. Until the family died out in 1640, the epithet was used throughout.

Other known members of this family was

  • Jakob Sturm von Sturmeck (1489–1553), reformed councilor and mayor, founder of the grammar school, which later became the University of Strasbourg
  • Peter Sturm von Sturmeck († 1563), Strasbourg city master, brother of Jakob
  • Jacob Sturm von Sturmeck († 1633), Strasbourg councilor, judge, chancellor of the University of Strasbourg
  • Jacob Friedrich Sturm von Sturmeck († 1640), last representative of his family
