Suatopolk

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Suatopolk , also Suantipolk , Swantopolk or Svantopolk , was a Duke of Pomerania at the beginning of the 12th century.

A contemporary tradition on Suatopolk comes from the chronicle of the Benedictine monk Gallus Anonymus († after 1116). This reports that Suatopolk by the Polish Duke Boleslaw III. Wrymouth , his relative, had been set in Nakel . However, after he opposite Duke Boleslaw III. did not keep the promised loyalty, he was subjected to 1111/1112 and had to take his son hostage. A little later the chronicle reports that in new battles the castle Nakel to Duke Boleslaw III. was handed over because the defenders of Suatopolk did not expect any help.

The chronicle also reports that a Pomeranian duke gave himself up to the Polish duke Boleslaw III in Kolberg as early as 1107/1108. had subjected. Perhaps this was already Suatopolk.

To 1119 the chronicle reports that Duke Boleslaw III. defeated two Pomeranian dukes at Nakel. It is not known whether Suatopolk was one of these two.

In the Krakow annals for the year 1122 a "Zuetopolc dux Odrenis" is mentioned. Possibly this also relates to this Suatopolk. The historian Adolf Hofmeister assumed this; the historian Roderich Schmidt , on the other hand, assumes two different dukes.

No further details are known about Duke Suatopolk. In particular, it is unknown how Duke Suatopolk was related to Duke Suatobor , mentioned a few years earlier in the Chronicle of Gallus Anonymus , and whether Duke Suatopolk was an ancestor of the Pomeranian ducal family of the Griffins , the brothers Wartislaw I († above 1148) and Ratibor I. († 1156) have come down to us.
