The Ahlenschnecken (Subulinidae) are a species and genera rich family from the subordination of the land lung snails (Stylommatophora). They are mostly inhabitants of the tropics and subtropics; only two species occur in Europe. The family first appears in the Fossil Record in the Lower Paleocene .

features

The housings are tall, slim and conical with a relatively large number of slightly arched passages. They are usually whitish to brownish in color. The surface is smooth or only slightly ornamented with strips of growth or folds. The egg-shaped opening usually has simple edges, rarely with thickened edges. In some species, the first rounds are thrown off ("decollation").

Occurrence and way of life

The family is predominantly broadened in the tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Only one type of Rumina decollata (Linné, 1758) also occurs in the Mediterranean region. The species occurs to southwest France.

Systematics

The family of the Ahlenschnecken belongs to the superfamily Achatinoidea. The family is divided into several subfamilies.

The subfamily Tristaniinae Schileyko, 1999 is listed by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) in synonymy under the subfamily Baleinae Wagner, 1913 (family Clausiliidae Gray, 1825).
