Sudbury Hall is a country house in the village Sudbury in the English county of Derbyshire .

Sudbury Hall is one of the most beautiful mansions in the Carolingian style in England. English Heritage has listed it as a Grade I Historic Building.

history

The Vernon family came to Sudbury through the marriage of Sir John Vernon and heiress Ellen Montgomery in the 16th century. The country house was built between 1660 and 1680 for George Vernon , the grandfather of George Venables-Vernon , the first Baron Vernon .

The property was leased for three years from 1840 by Queen Adelheid , the widow of King Wilhelm IV . The east wing was added by George Devey in the years 1876-1883.

The buildings are now owned and managed by the National Trust . The Vernon family transferred the property to them in 1967.

construction

Sudbury Hall is best known for its grand main staircase, long gallery, portraits of John Michael Wright and the mistresses of King Charles II .

The interiors feature a mix of architectural styles, sculptures by Grinling Gibbons and Edward Pearce , murals by Louis Laguerre, and beautifully detailed plasterwork by Samuel Mansfield, James Pettifer, and Robert Bradbury . The stone carvings above the main entrance were done by William Wilson .

There are formal gardens on the property with a tree-lined lake.

Cherry Ann Knott says the entrance hall construction is based on that of Crewe Hall in Cheshire , which is about 2 km from Haslington Hall , where George Vernon was born.

In film and television

The house was also the setting for the interior scenes set in Pemberley in the 1995 BBC film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice .

National Trust Museum of Childhood

The National Trust Museum of Childhood is located in the 19th century servants wing, not to be confused with the Victoria & Albert Museum of Childhood in London .
