The Museum of Childhood

The Museum of Childhood is located in East London, in Bethnal Green . It is part of the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum ( short form: V&A ). The current director of the collections is Sir Roy Strong .

history

The museum was founded in 1877 under the name Bethnal Green Museum . This found its way into a prefabricated building. This came from the former complex of the Victoria and Albert Museum and was located in South Kensington . After dismantling, which took place translocation of Albertopolis in East London.

The museum was closed from 2005 due to a renovation and an extension. The museum has been open again since December 2006.

The construction work created a new entrance area. Other structural changes affected the permanent exhibition and the functional areas inside the three-aisled exhibition hall.

collection

The building has hosted very different exhibitions in its history. After 1920 the theme of the exhibition shifted to the education and upbringing of children. Since 1974 it has been operating specifically as a collection on the theme of childhood .

The museum shows and describes in particular things that were designed by and for children. The museum's collection includes items such as games and toys such as dolls , dollhouses , clothing for children and much more. The collection includes a Käthe Kruse doll that Vera Buchthal, later Steve Shirley , took with her on the Kindertransport to England in 1939 .
